Lipedema Diagnosis Guide: Could My Symptoms Be Lipoedema?

Conveniently located to serve London

Lipedema can cause disproportionate fat, tenderness, heaviness and easy bruising, most commonly in the legs, hips and thighs. Because it can resemble ordinary weight gain, lymphoedema or localised stubborn fat, an appropriate clinical assessment is important.

There is no single blood test or scan that confirms lipoedema. Diagnosis is primarily based on your symptoms, medical history, physical examination and exclusion of other possible causes.

Could It Be Lipoedema?

Common Lipoedema Signs Less Typical of Lipoedema
✓ Both legs affected similarly Fat distributed evenly across the body
✓ Hips/thighs disproportionately larger One leg significantly different from the other
✓ Feet usually unaffected Swelling prominently affecting the feet
✓ Pain or tenderness Painless localised fat
✓ Easy bruising No unusual bruising
✓ Heavy or aching legs Cosmetic contour concern only
✓ Resistant to overall weight loss Changes proportionately with weight loss
Recognize several of these symptoms?

How Is Lipoedema Diagnosed?

Lipoedema is primarily a clinical diagnosis. During an assessment, your clinician may look at:

1. Symptoms
Pain, tenderness, bruising, heaviness and swelling.

2. Fat Distribution
Whether fatty tissue affects both legs symmetrically and appears disproportionate to the upper body.

3. Ankles & Feet
Lipoedema typically spares the feet and may create a noticeable change in contour around the ankles.

4. Medical History
When symptoms began, changes around hormonal milestones, family history and response to previous weight loss.

5. Other Possible Causes
Other conditions may need to be considered or excluded before a diagnosis is made.

Is There a Lipoedema Test?

No single test currently confirms lipoedema.

Blood tests, ultrasound or MRI are not standalone lipoedema diagnostic tests. Additional investigations may sometimes be recommended to evaluate other potential causes of your symptoms.

Lipoedema vs Other Causes of Leg Enlargement

VISUAL: “WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?”

Lipoedem a General Weight Gain Lymphoedema
Both legs Usually ✓ Often ✓ May vary
Disproportionate lower body Common Less characteristic Not primarily fat distribution
Feet spared Usually ✓ — Often not
Tender/painful tissue Common Less typical Can occur
Easy bruising Common Less typical Less characteristic
Resistant areas after weight loss Common Less typical Not primarily a weight issue

Important: These differences are a guide, not a diagnostic tool. Symptoms can overlap.

What Stage of Lipoedema Could I Have?

VISUAL STAGE GUIDE

STAGE 1
Smooth skin → enlarged or tender fatty tissue
↓

STAGE 2
Uneven texture → increasingly nodular tissue
↓

STAGE 3
Larger folds/lobules → more significant contour and mobility changes
↓

ADVANCED / LYMPHATIC INVOLVEMENT
Lipoedema + lymphatic dysfunction → additional swelling may develop

Lipoedema or Stubborn Fat?

What doctor diagnoses lipoedema in the UK?

Patients may initially discuss symptoms with their GP or seek an appropriate specialist assessment.

No. There is currently no blood test that definitively diagnoses lipoedema.
